"Prinzenstraße"

The next stop on our tour is "Prinzenstraße", where you can visit several beautiful old houses being a sign of careful urban renewel. House No. 38 with the chair of grace (Gnadenstuhl) is very interesting: it shows Goldfather as PANTOKRATOR, i.e. judge of the universe.

In remembrance  of the donor of the building land for this street - about 2,1 ha for 32 sites - the street obtained its name; it was "Prince Carl von Hessen", the owner of the spot Kappeln and Roest Manor. The relationship between the town and the landlords of Roest was characterized by hard conflicts and generous donations.

A striking example of this is the walkout of about 60 families from Kappeln to Arnis in 1667, who so could escape from the owner`s strict regiment.

On the other hand our church "St. Nikolai" is a good example of the generous transfer of ownership: it was donated by "Herrn von Rumohr", who was the landowner of Kappeln and the Roest estate in 1793.
